about

For the latest release in the label’s ongoing Myths of Ibiza series of digital-only EPs, NuNorthern Soul has looked West to San Francisco’s Bay Area, a location whose musical history is rooted in hazy psychedelia, dubbed-out grooves, sun-baked melodic motifs and kaleidoscopic aural colour.

Songs For Suns marks the full label debut of Cole Odin, a multi-instrumentalist and producer who has been a participant in the vibrant Bay Area scene for the best part of a quarter of a century. As inspired by wide-eyed, spaced-out psychedelic rock and heady dub disco as effects laden Balearica, baked downtempo grooves and trippy dance music, Odin has risen to prominence on the electronic underground in recent years thanks to well-received EPs on Eclectic and Leng, the latter in cahoots with Canadian hero Eddie C.

From the word go, Odin signposts his love of hallucinatory, sun-parched psychedelic rock sounds. On ‘Spinning on a Rock’, Odin stumbles from a baking Californian desert laden with low-slung, loose-limbed drums, jazzy electric piano motifs and waves of glistening, eyes-closed guitar solos and fuzzbox-soaked riffs courtesy of guest axe-slinger Randy Clark.

Odin picks up a guitar himself on ‘Flying Towards The Sun’, doffing a cap towards Santana whilst layering up waves of undulating synth sounds, snappy drums, chugging electronic bass and Mezcal-infused mid-afternoon atmospherics. The track subtly increases in intensity throughout, tiptoeing closer towards dancefloors while providing an impressively immersive listening experience.

Deep, droning analogue bass comes to the fore on ‘Growing’, which is also featured on this year’s Summer Selections EP (volume four, fact fans). This time round, Odin opts for chiming, child-like melodies, warming chords, soul-enriching effects and, as the track builds towards a breathless conclusion, a whisper of intoxicating, spaced-out guitar. It’s quickly followed by EP closer ‘Handsprings’, where gorgeous, classically beautiful Harmonium chords usher in a beguiling mix of languid bass guitar, reverb-doused, Latin-tinged drums (provided by guest musician Luiza Leite) and oodles of picturesque melodies. If it doesn’t put a smile on your face, we’ll be very surprised.

As with every other EP in the Myths of Ibiza series, Songs For Suns comes with bespoke, specially created artwork from White Isle-based illustrator Emily McGuinness. This time round, McGuiness has opted for a depiction of Atlantis, a ‘castle like city’ crafted from the remains of an old stone quarry on Atlantis Beach. Inspired by the mythical ‘lost city’ of Atlantis, the quarry’s carved walls were not crafted by ancient inhabitants, but rather the hippies who flocked to Ibiza in the 1960s and made the island their home.

Cole Odin (Ownership) San Francisco, California

Cole Odin aka OWNERSHIP creates psychedelic rock-tinged, deep balearic electronic music for NOW. Born from the twin hearts of San Francisco- a gritty underground DJ scene, and the blinding light of a rock and roll stage, it is music inspired by the raw moments of the human experience. It loves the hairs on end, uncontrollable smiles, and the concept of a song you can't take off repeat. ... more
